I have to agree with you that there are many other factors other than academic that can negatively influence learning, some of the examples you have mentioned in your post, and I have to say that UDL is one of the best models to implement learning effectively, regardless of backgrounds and problems faced outside of the academic area. I think that UDL eliminates these factors by making the structure, expectations clearer and easy to understand so that student knows while doing the course where they stand and where they need to go.
I really enjoyed your post, you have gone deeper in detail for each sections.
